you have to be really careful if you plan on planting your tree after christmas. potted evergreens, kept inside, come out of dormancy, the best time to plant a tree is when it’s in the dormant stage (late fall, early spring). trees planted out of the dormant stage have a very high mortality rate. i don’t know of any way to artificially induce dormancy, increasing the potential life of your tree. hopefully you got one of the super hearty ones…

for my dad and I, getting a christmas tree is a tradition. there’s nothing that can replace the smell of a douglas fir tree, or how beautifully lush it is. And besides, they are called tree arms or a reason- we’re not going out into the woods and cutting down trees, these are feilds of firs that were planted to be cut down and then replaced.

  • angischy:

How long does it take to make this for someone of average DIY/craftiness skills?

  • Fancylooks:

Ooooh! We used to have one like this back in the 70′s, my mother would decorate it with plenty of colorful shiny balls, She threw it away in the 80s, and it was a pitty for me, as all my Chritsmas chilhood memories are conected to that silver tinsel tree.

  • bellesandwhistles:

well tinsel is made from plastic, which will be around for thousands if not millions of years, while a tree will biodegrade. so, hmm, what’s greener? I’m sticking with a real tree this year.

  • lexiconlover:

OH, I wasn’t saying the decorating was pagan, but thank you for your comment anyway, I think that I had been unclear with what I was saying. :)

  • mwnjw:

First off, the tinsel tree is retro-my grandparents also had the rotating colored filter, which made it turn all kinds of colors. Second, it would decorative tree IN ADDITION to your green (pun intended!) one.
This might be easier using copper pipe the hardware store. A drill + wider pipe (base) + narrower pipe for the branches. Or combine it with the wire for lighter-weight. Not so much wrapping of the wire and very sturdy.

Meg, fabulous idea! Merry Christmas from our house to yours!

  • stalkher:

my parents have had the same artificial tree for 20 years.

  • kiasuten:

I think the idea is that you can reuse the tinsel tree every year, whereas with a real tree it will get thrown out. If you keep the real tree in the ground and reuse the tinsel tree every year, you are saving the real tree.

  • giraffesarereal:

i’d guess at least 3 hours. depending on how fast you wrap tinsel…

  • riotriotriot55:

of course it isn’t pagan! it’s a german tradition that western culture adopted.

  • SarahbethUchiha:

i have a fake one that is like half my hight and were taking it with us to Disney so we don’t have to pay for them to make us a christmas tree. plus then we can shop around disney for new things to place on it. me- i like to post old photos of our past trips to Disney.

  • timsbro2000:

I don’t don’t know about everyone else but I call it garland. It annoyed me every time she called it tinsel.

I guess it can be called “tinsel garland” but still, to me tinsel is the loose strands of silver that you throw on the tree and gets everywhere.

  • midorixxmonster:

    Hahahaha, you’re right.
    I call it garland too.

  • redroxi:

the word branches has now lost all meaning to me.

  • sharonipwni:

tinsel can be used as a garland but a garland does not need to be made of tinsel.

  • timsbro2000:

yes I included the note on “tinsel garland” for that very reason. I know originally garland was made of actual evergreen boughs. It’s not that it’s wrong to call it tinsel it’s just not how I do it and it’s how I have always heard it done.
